No matter what the other person is going through, the best thing you can do for someone is just to listen to them. This may sound like a very easy thing to do but it is a lot harder than you think.
We as humans naturally want to judge and comment.
Listening to your friend cry over the same toxic person can get a little overwhelming. All you want to do is tell them to “get over it” or “She/he isn’t worth it” however, this is not what your friend wants to hear.
Your friend maybe just wants an ear to listen without any judgment and trust me it feels great being that ear. It makes you feel happier to make someone feel happy.
Comforting someone can even be awkward sometimes. You want to be there for that person. Show empathy and tell them that everything will get fine eventually. Comforting someone is actually a skill and not everyone knows how to effectively do it without feeling awkward. If you are a person who is not used to being the comforter, all you can think of doing is comforting that person like a pet and hope that he/she will eventually feel better.

How to comfort someone who is dying
Comforting someone who is dying is a very hard and heart-wrenching. Its a fact of life that we all must face at some point.
The person is dying and no matter what you say will not take away the fact that their life is coming to an end and they will soon leave this world. It is hard to come up with the right words that will make the other person feel slightly better.
Here are some things you could do to comfort someone who is dying :
Start with having meaningful conversation with them. Everyone is comforted in their own ways and no matter what you say make sure you help them realise that you are there for them….always.
Saying “I love you” can boost a person’s mood instantly and after you leave them. You don’t only need to say that vocally. There are plenty of other ways like giving your loved one card, drawings or even hand written letters.
Give them encouragement to be more open about their feelings. Some people don’t like sharing their feelings so do your best to make them speak about this. Ask them to express their feelings, tell their regrets or share their experiences.
Be supportive and kind. A small change in your tone can upset the person and the last thing you want to do is upset a dying person. Don’t be overly enthusiastic as some people may take an immediate offence.
Lastly, ask them to forgive. If there has ever been any bad feelings try to understand that the person is wishing to go in the most peaceful way possible so holding grudges from the past will just make it harder to deal with….Consider apologies and put things right.
