The vast majority of our behavior is habitual. As much as we feel like we are thinking throughout the day, and making conscious decisions, much of our activity is driven by deeply ingrained habits. The question is, how did these habits form? The answer lies in our subconscious mind. This is the non-thinking mind. It faithfully carries out mental commands just like a computer obediently follows digital code. The subconscious mind is largely programmed before the age of 6 or 7 years. In these early stages of development, the conscious mind is not fully developed, and therefore our environment has direct and unhindered access to the subconscious. This explains why we speak the language we do, why we like the foods we like, why we dress the way we do, and so much more. Many attitudes, beliefs, likes, dislikes, biases, and attitudes are rooted deep in this part of the mind from a very early age. This occurred without our knowledge or consent. The “programmers” of our minds in these formative years are the people we spend the most time with. These are typically our parents, siblings, relatives, friends, neighbors, clergy-people, and teachers. Our minds are wide open to the suggestions they expose us to – mostly through their words and actions. Most of us are completely unaware of this powerful and potentially harmful process even much later in adulthood. Most of us have no idea why behave the way do and become frustrated with ourselves, especially when it comes to behavioral patterns and results we don’t like. This same process continues our entire lives. Our senses are exposed to the world around us. This includes people, eating habits, exercise patterns, television, the internet, social media, radio, magazines, books, etc. Literally, anything you can hear, see, smell, taste, or touch can have an impact on your habitual choices and behavior. The truth is, everyone wants to be happy. We all wish to live fruitful, meaningful, and positive lives. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. Too often, our daily habits become self-defeating and lead to disappointing results which leave us unhappy and unfulfilled. This leads to a general sense of negativity within us. The good news is, once you understand how your magnificent mind works, you can take control of your thinking, your subconscious program, and ultimately your results. You can build a beautiful life filled with joy, rewarding relationships, and experiences. This all begins six very powerful words: you become what you think about. Repetition of thought will eventually imprint on your subconscious hard drive. This programming will then dictate your habitual behavior. This will, in turn, yield joyous and rewarding results. Once you master this process, you will be in the driver’s seat. You will be in control. Think positive thoughts, and you will automatically adopt positive behaviors. You will see and feel the effects almost immediately. You must also surround yourself with upbeat, enthusiastic, and productive people. Let their positivity shine on you like a beacon of light. Avoid unnecessary contact with negative and pessimistic people from your past. When you do need to interact with them, limit the time you spend together. This is of critical importance. Watch TV shows that are uplifting and inspirational. Avoid the news. I call it the bad news. Stay away from it as much as you can. It’s poison for your mind. Read positive books, articles, and magazines. Visit inspirational websites for motivational quotes and listen to educational podcasts that have real value in your life. Rid your life as completely as possible of mental junk food. Remember – you become what you think about. It has been said you become the average of the five people with whom you spend the most time. I believe that’s true. Choose your friends and associates carefully. Stand guard at the gateway to your precious mind. Avoid the naysayers and pessimists. They will pollute your thinking and destroy your chances to be your best self. To develop positive behaviors and see extraordinary results in your life, think good and wonderful thoughts all the time. If you are disciplined in this process, you will see that this technique works like unadulterated magic.
